Educational Activities

The 100+ Must Read Literary Society: Members read books from the Must Read list and sent comments to jeanbette40@charter.net and they will be posted on the website. The purpose is to encourage reading about and by people of color.

The BEO- African Heritage Summer Institute for Children: The purpose is to provide cultural and educational experiences to all children ages 5 – 15 interested in Africa and the African Diaspora regardless of race, color, or national origin. The program consists of a series on mini units on various aspects of our African heritage, such as music, dance, languages, arts and crafts, fashions, written and oral traditions and history. The program is usually held the last three Saturdays in July.
The African Heritage Institute will conduct seminars and workshops on Africa, African American History, Civil Rights, Voting, Self-Esteem and Anger Management at various locations.

The Annual African Market Extravaganza and Gospel Festival: The celebration consists of African music, drumming, dance, fashion, food, poetry and artifacts. The NIA Picture and Reading Museum will be on display along with the AHSI-AHII Traveling Museum and Heritage Library. The event is held the last Saturday in July. We will have a variety of vendors selling ethnic clothing and artifacts.

The AHSI-AHII (ah-see a-hee) Traveling Museum and Heritage Library: It consists of artifacts and relics from the present and past used to explain our heritage and other reactions to our past. It is on tour at various times.

The AHSI-AHII Biography Series: The purpose of the biography series is to highlight the achievements and/or impact on society of known and lesser known persons of African heritage and to generate an income for the Institute. The series will include individual and collective biographies.

Fund Raising Activities

The African Heritage Cookbook will contain recipes with a brief history of the recipe and the person submitting the recipe. Some pictures will be included. If you have any recipes, please submit them to jeanbette40@charter.net

The Thrift Shop operates once a month at 417 Elizabeth Drive.

Presentation Plays: This is the presenting of plays written by various authors to raise money for programs of the Institute.

“Brother Can You Spare A Dollar” is a Five Year Million Dollar “Dollar” Campaign with the purpose of collecting “One Dollar” from a million people over the next five years. They will be used to expand our “School without Walls” which includes the BEO-African Heritage Summer Institute for Children, this educational website, the AHSI-AHII Traveling Museum and Heritage Library, a language lab and to establish a learning center in Kenya. Anyone wishing to send a donation, mail it to:

The AHI Circle of Friends: Membership is granted to anyone who gives at least $25.00 a year. You may contribute at anytime. And have the opportunity to make suggestions on the operation of the Institute.
