Betty Elrod Owens retired from Greenville Technical College in Greenville, SC, in May 2003, where she taught African History, African American History and American History for 13 years. She also taught American History as an adjutant assistant professor at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. She has three academic degrees and one honorary degree. Betty studied at the following colleges and universities: Morristown Junior College in Morristown, TN; Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC; Furman University in Greenville, SC; Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN; and
Covington Theological Seminary in Rossville, GA. In the summer of 1998, she studied in Cameroon on a Fulbright Travel Group Fellowship and established contacts in several African countries. The retired educator is an active historian, lecturer, poet and playwright. She is a former president of the Greenville County League of Women Voters, an active democrat, and a FORMER hospice volunteer with Vista Care. Betty is a lifelong member of the Sweet Canaan Baptist Church IN PIEDMONT, SC.
In July, 1999, she organized the BEO- African Heritage Summer Institute for Children. The purpose was to provide cultural and educational experiences pertaining to the study of Africa. On May 13, 2002, Betty Owens found the African Heritage Institute, Inc., an educational oriented, nonprofit charitable corporation dedicated to the exploration and study of the African Heritage. An in July 2003, she organized the Ahsi Ahii ( ah-see a-hee) Travel Museum and Heritage Library as a part of the African Heritage Institute.
